SPORTS NEWS

Atlanta United gave its home supporters a 3-1 win to close out the club’s 2026 regular-season schedule at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Miguel Almirón, Cooper Sanchez and Alexey Miranchuk scored against Toronto FC on Sunday, November 1, during Fan Appreciation Night.

The result offered Atlanta a strong finish at home, even though the club had already missed the playoffs for a second straight season. Atlanta’s postseason hopes ended after a 2-1 loss at New York City FC. That earlier elimination shaped the stakes of Sunday’s match: the playoff race was over for Atlanta, but the final home date still gave the team an opportunity to close the season in front of its supporters with a win.

The club’s official match recap and the ESPN match page record the same score and goal times. The Associated Press report also noted that the result eliminated Toronto from playoff contention.

Almirón opens the scoring

The teams traded early chances. Atlanta goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos made a save on Theo Corbeanu in the fifth minute. Breel Embolo found the net for Atlanta soon afterward, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Atlanta took the lead in the 22nd minute with a combination through the center of the field. Sanchez helped start the move, Almirón exchanged passes with Miranchuk, and Almirón finished past Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran. It was a coordinated attacking sequence that gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

The Toronto FC recap also described the opening goal as a team move ending with Almirón’s finish from Miranchuk’s pass. The goal brought together two of Atlanta’s most productive players, and the pair remained involved as the match developed.

Sanchez adds his first MLS goal

Atlanta doubled its lead in the 40th minute. Giuliano Galoppo played a ball forward to Almirón, who moved toward the end line and sent a pass back across the area. Sanchez met it with a first-time left-footed shot and placed the ball in the bottom corner.

The finish marked Sanchez’s first MLS goal. Atlanta United’s recap reported that he became the fourth player to score a regular-season goal for the club before turning 19, joining Caleb Wiley, George Bello and Brandon Vázquez.

For Atlanta, the second goal was more than a cushion before halftime. It was a milestone for a young player and a reward for a move that began with Galoppo’s pass and Almirón’s run. The 2-0 score held through the break.

Miranchuk makes it three

Atlanta extended the lead six minutes into the second half. Almirón struck from distance, and his effort hit the crossbar. Miranchuk reacted to the rebound and finished to make it 3-0 in the 51st minute.

Almirón’s involvement in all three scoring sequences underlined his influence on the match. He scored the opener, assisted Sanchez’s goal and hit the shot that created Miranchuk’s rebound chance. The official recap described the first and third goals as part of the pair’s combination play, while ESPN’s match record lists both Almirón and Miranchuk among the scorers.

The three-goal lead did not end Atlanta’s attacking efforts. The club’s recap noted further chances for Embolo, substitute Jay Fortune and Tristan Muyumba. Atlanta finished with eight shots on target, according to the official recap and ESPN’s match statistics.

Toronto pulls one back

Toronto kept pressing in the later stages. Lewis Morgan, introduced as a substitute, scored in the 79th minute after Atlanta could not clear the ball. The goal made the score 3-1, but Atlanta held on for the home win.

The Toronto FC recap confirms Morgan’s goal and the final score. The result also ended Toronto’s chance to reach the playoffs, according to the AP report. Atlanta, by contrast, had already been eliminated after its loss at NYCFC.

The closing minutes included more activity at both ends. Atlanta continued to look for another goal, while Toronto tried to build on Morgan’s finish. The score remained unchanged, giving Atlanta its final home victory of the regular season.

A Fan Appreciation Night send-off

The match was Atlanta United’s last home date of the 2026 regular season and was promoted by the club as Fan Appreciation Night. Before kickoff, the club advertised player meet-and-greets, signed mini-ball giveaways, mystery bags, free hot dogs and activities on the Front Porch. The club’s Fan Appreciation Night announcement outlined those events.

A reported crowd of 41,197 attended at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. What we couldn’t verify: The figure appears in secondary match listings, but we did not find it in the Atlanta United recap, AP report or ESPN match page reviewed for this article. It should be treated as a reported attendance figure rather than a number confirmed by those sources.

Atlanta closes its home schedule with a win

The 3-1 result gave Atlanta a clear finish to its home schedule: three goals from three different scorers, a first MLS goal for Sanchez and an influential performance from Almirón. It did not change the club’s postseason status, but it gave supporters a victory to take from the final home night.

Atlanta’s regular season continued with an away match against the New York Red Bulls, according to the club’s match recap. Sunday’s game was therefore the home finale, not the team’s final match of the season.
