At the 2026 Sheen Magazine Awards, gospel rapper Canton Jones spoke with Brandon Suggs of Live Life Half Price about creating music that connects faith with the sounds people enjoy outside church.

The conversation was brief, but his answer explains the thinking behind a sound that has drawn listeners who might not reach for gospel records on their own: faith carried by music made for the rest of the week.

Interview conducted by Brandon Suggs of Live Life Half Price.

Canton Jones on making music for every day

Brandon Suggs: We are here at the 2026 Sheen Awards with Canton Jones. You created a new sound for gospel that draws different people in. What motivated you to say, I need to do something different but praise God at the same time?

Canton Jones: We had Sunday church, but I needed something when I left church. I needed Monday through Saturday church. I needed music that would help me connect to God.

Sometimes, church music is not it for me. Just like Christmas music: you want to hear Christmas music around Christmas time, but you do not want to hear it after Christmas. Church music is sometimes what you want to hear in church, but it is not what you ride to.

I wanted to make music that I could ride to, but that still had God. That is how we came up with that sound.

Jones’s answer centers on music that carries faith beyond the church setting. His “Monday through Saturday church” phrase captures the idea behind the sound he described: making songs he can ride to while staying connected to God. The Christmas music comparison is doing real work in his answer too. He is not dismissing church music, he is describing a specific job it does and a different job his music is built for.
